Common Questions About Robotic Surgery

Q. Does the robot do any part of the surgery, eg. cutting or stitching, by its own computer software? What if it makes a mistake ?
A. The robotic system does not do anything by itself. Every move it makes is controlled by the surgeon at the console. The robot cannot make any decision on behalf of the surgeon.

Q. Is keyhole surgery just as good as robotic surgery?
A. Both keyhole surgery (laparoscopic surgery) and robotic surgery use tools and techniques to assist the surgeon perform the operation. In laparoscopy, the surgeon looks at the inside of the patient's body on a 2D TV screen. While in robotic surgery, the surgeon feels that he or she is in a 3D environment when operating.

Q. What are the advantages of robotic surgery?
A. Some major advantages of robotic surgery are precision, miniaturization, smaller incisions, decreased blood loss, less pain, and quicker healing time. Further advantages are articulation beyond normal manipulation and three-dimensional magnification, resulting in improved ergonomics. Robotic techniques are also associated with reduced duration of hospital stays, blood loss, transfusions, and use of pain medication.
